The Fiasco At Anzio is the memoir of Staff Sgt. Theodore Thayer about his time in the army during World War 2, especially the landing and subsequent push from the Anzio beachhead.

The Fiasco At Anzio eBook Theodore Thayer Richard Wolf

When I first started reading this, I didn't know what to think, I pondered if it was a fabrication to sell more memoirs or what. As I read into it and especially at the end with his explanation of how it came to be and when, I realized that it is actually highly credible. That was good, since it's one of the better memoirs I've read. Very interesting with excellent detail. As it turns out, he effectively wrote this immediately after returning to the US as a wounded vet, and was not allowed to publish it because of censuring due to the war still being on. That explained to me how he could have such detail in the events described.

The book is engaging and personal, marred only by a few typos and grammatical run-ons. They didn't bother me in the least.

In my opinion, the research he put into telling the events going on in Anzio beyond what he had direct involvement with, made this probably the best description of that battle I have ever read, yet did not detract from that "foxhole" view so compelling in memoirs. I came out feeling like I had finally learned the specifics of how things came down, something I'd never been that comfortable with from the many accounts I've read about that action.

Lastly, I'd say I was impressed with this man. He obviously really cared about not just the battle, but how an action should be managed. He did his homework before forming his opinions, and it shows.

The book held me captive for about 7 hours reading time. Well spent time.

Great read
I',m a military collector and I had recently purchased a Purple Heart and Silver Star named to Theodore Thayer and was wonderfully surprised to find that he had written about his experiences in WWII and Specificlly Anzio where the Silver Star had been awarded to him.
